You’d recognize her easy smile anywhere. For years, Carolyn O’Neil reported on CNN about food and nutrition issues. A trusted voice in the food industry, her attention has now turned to seafood from the Gulf of Mexico.

O’Neil, a registered dietician and newspaper correspondent, was recently in New Orleans to learn the latest fundamentals of seafood safety at a symposium hosted by the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board. She actively writes the Atlanta Journal and Constitution’s syndicated “Healthy Eating Out” column.

She had made a point of traveling from Georgia for a chance to learn more and clear up misconceptions about gulf seafood among her readers.

“This is my favorite kind of story – where there’s misperception, there’s an opportunity,” O’Neil said of debunking myth and enlightening the public about a food issue.

British Petroleum, the giant oil company has spent nearly $100 million on ads to promote its own company, but has declined to fully follow through on its promise to make things right in Louisiana after the company’s runaway oil well gushed oil into the Gulf of Mexico for more than three months. BP has pledged to help restore the reputation and trust in Louisiana seafood.

Until BP delivers on its promises to restore the brand image of Louisiana seafood, industry leaders are inviting brand ambassadors such as O’Neill to come to Louisiana and learn more about their product.

“As a registered dietician I believe the more you know, the more you can eat,” she explains. “And the more I learn about the safety of gulf seafood that is on the market, the more confident I am to continue to recommend that Americans eat more of it as part of a healthy and certainly delicious diet.”

“All across this great nation we have reached out to help farmer in time of crisis and need. It’s time to American fishermen.”

O’Neil recommends two servings of seafood a week for weight management and heart health. “It has been more tested than ever before by the federal government, state officials and local officials. If you feel that you want to do something for yourself, your body, your mind, your children and your family … and, America … I say buy gulf seafood.”
